Uses of Vitamins

Uses of Vitamin A:

Vitamin A is Retinol. Retinol is involved in the bone growth and tooth development. Vitamin A is needed for reproduction, cell division and gene expression. Vitamin A is essential to moisture the skin, eyes, nose, throat and lungs.

Sources:

Eat variety of foods then you will get vitamin A. Vitamin A is present in dairy products, fishes and liver. You get Beta-carotene or Pro-vitamin A from fruits and vegetables like carrot, winter squash, dark green leafy vegetables etc.

Deficiency:

  1. Night blindness and dry skin is due to the deficiency of vitamin A.
  2. Faulty tooth development and slower bone growth is due to the deficiency of retinol.

Toxicity:

Dry, itchy skin, loss of appetite, headache are due to toxicity of retinol.

Uses of Vitamin E:

Vitamin E is an antioxidant. It protects vitamin A and vitamin C. It protects the essential fatty acids from destruction. Vitamin E supplements will prevent cancer and heart diseases. Regularly eat fruits and vegetables. It reduces the risk of cancer, heart diseases and also several diseases.

Deficiency:

Deficiency of vitamin E is very rare and it occurs only in premature infants. Absorption of fats is affected when there is vitamin E deficiency.

Uses of Vitamin K:

Vitamin K is used in the normal blood clotting and it also helps to promote bone health.

Sources of Vitamin K:

Vitamin K is in green vegetables like turnip green, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower. Vegetables oils like soybean oil, cottonseed oil, olive oil etc are also the sources of vitamin K.

Deficiency:

Hemorrhaging occurs due to vitamin K deficiency. When you take anticoagulants or antibiotic drugs then deficiency of vitamin K may occur. So take vitamin K supplements after consulting the physician.
