FDA reports its efforts to make food supplies safe in the US
Recently, different circles have been criticizing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration regarding its poor performance to make food supply in the U.S. safe. FDA responds to this criticism in a report that details its efforts to make food supplies safe and protect consumers.
Dr. David Acheson, who is assistant commissioner for food protection at the agency, says in this connection: “The agency’s proposal to develop better relationships with different local health departments and state regarding protecting food supply was one of the most important tasks that the agency worked for.”
“And the second big success is to make the strategic change regarding imports and this act can be called FDA’s globalization, and due to this we are shifting our intentions to inspect the foods items at the time of entry. Similarly, FDA is focused to develop such systems as may help to provide better understanding of what’s happening in foreign manufacturing.”
Frozen chicken dinners: 32 people sickened with salmonella poisoning in 12 states
The US government has warned consumers to cook frozen chicken dinners properly, as there were reports of 32 illnesses with salmonella poisoning in 12 states.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture particularly mentions frozen dishes in which the chicken is raw, but it gives the appearance of being cooked including dishes like chicken cordon blue, chicken Kiev and other stuffed chicken breasts (with vegetables, cheese or other items).
According to the USDA report, the people who got illnesses apparently didn’t follow the cooking instructions described on the packages and they microwaved the chicken dishes even though no instructions were provided for it. Micorwaving doesn’t provide the heat that is considered sufficient to kill the salmonella in the meals.
The department urged the consumers to cook chicken products to a minimum 165 degrees Fahrenheit internal temperature.
Salmonella outbreak has ‘apparently’ come to an end, CDC says.
According to CDC, the salmonella outbreak, which causes 1440 illnesses, has apparently come to an end in the country. The ultimate source of the disease may never be known because of somewhat defective food safety system in the country.
The Food and Drug Administration and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told that they had found strong evidence that jalapeno and Serrano peppers that produced in some farms in the Mexico were the real culprits in the largest outbreak of foodborne disease during a decade. Investigators couldn’t clear imported and domestic tomatoes and there were weaker evidence against the tomatoes.
