It has been announced Tuesday that St. Louis Hospital is planning to research for the better apprehension of birth defect conditions in children. St. Louis Hospital is one of the best children’s hospitals.

As told by surgeon in chief of St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Dr. Brad Warner, the research aims at the in depth study of birth defect CDH i.e., Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. Every 1 baby in 2,000 is born with the disease, with a 50 percent survival chances; half of those fail to make to their 1st birthday.

Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia is formulated when the chest cavity separation diaphragm does not build accurately in the womb.

Due to this defect lungs also do not form properly as the contents of the belly spread up to the chest.

Last year 8 new born died at the St. Louis hospital with the same disease. The treatments for birth defects vary from condition to condition, as many babies are stillborn. Most of the babies who face death due to birth defects usually have insufficient, undeveloped and underdeveloped lung tissues, which are helpful for survival.

Sometimes the cause of death is the development of hypertension in the lungs blood vessels. The problem arises when blood pressure lowering medications lower the baby’s overall body blood pressure. Those who survive feel trouble right from the time of cutting the umbilical cord. While, there are other, which become terrible with the time proceedings. There is another rare group in which babies primarily look fine but their condition worsen after some time.

Over the past decade, women’s health has emerged as a rapidly expanding field of scientific inquiry and knowledge with important implications for clinical practice. Women’s health can be viewed broadly as the study of the effect of sex and gender on health and disease that occurs across the spectrum of the biologic, behavioral, and social sciences.

Today I am going to study an important issue of women health- that is HOT FLUSH. Although hot flush can be found very occasionally in case of male.

It is not a disease actually; symptom of a disease – the compositions of some problems which raise out at the commencement of menopause (the cessation of menstrual cycle) and perimenopause (the junction between two time spans of the end stage menstruation and the cessation of menstruation). As we are just talking regarding menstrual cycle, you can understand this is a common feature among the women at their end stage of reproductive life. Excessive feelings of severe heat along with profuse production of sweat followed by fast pulse rate are common features.

Duration of each episode of attack lasts for few seconds to several minutes usually; but sometimes can be lasted for more than half an hour. Lower chin to upper part of the front and back of the chest, whole face, back of the neck, top of the scalp these are usually the trigger points. Then the whole area of the body starts to feel heated. Losing consciousness is not uncommon by the harsh episode of attack in case of some very ill health women. The extreme expression of hot flushes is the flaring of skin of the face to raised temperature followed by blushing or redness. It can be easily felt the raised temperature, if you touch the face of the patient and the redness is easily visible in naked eye.

Hot flushes usually found in menopausal women- it is a general idea. You will find many women yet to menopause (what we can say perimenopausal women) is showing the features of hot flushes very severely. Again many women will show very uneventful cool menopause. Never complains of hot flushes. In most of the common cases the hot flushes appears just few years of menopause and prevails over a long period; even after many years of menopause. In these types of cases the episodes of hot flushes are usually within the tolerable limit and occasional. The worst lucked women can face even more than 12 attacks per day. Another thing we can take in considers, that is environmental temperature or surrounding temperature. Women in cold countries usually suffer less by this. Because excessive hot weather can increase the hot flushes to a harsh form.

Sleep disturbance or insomnia is very common problem among the patients with hot flushes. Then what happens? In the day time it can effect on the performance of the person. She may become less productive in her job place. not only that regular sleep disturbance creates bad effect on physical environment leading to rise of various problem like hypertension, diabetes, bowel discomfort etc. among these women rate of road traffic accidents are very high. Why?-you can understand easily…

Post menopausal women may face usually two types of hot flush episodes. The Sudden severe short form and the gradual long form. First one is characterized by sudden attack of hot flush rise to the peak within few seconds to few minutes; then slowly decreases. The second form usually the most painful. It appears very slowly, never goes so peak but can remain even throughout the day. This type of patients may suffer for years together. When sufferings for several years then the severity of the sudden attack usually decreases.

So only menopausal women are suffers from hotflush? No, not exactly, it is always not true only menopausal or per menopausal women are the main sufferer. There are a lot of causes which can cause hot flush. Among which some are normal physiological and some are disease conditions.physiologiacl hot flush occurs when the estrogen level of the body is decreased any way. This only occurs during menstruation or just before menstruation. Young girls feels hot and cold wave like feelings alternately but for very few minutes. Again same type of features can be found other than menstruation- which indicates the pituitary hormone regulating dysfunction due to trouble of the pituitary gland. But one thing is important- if young girls starts to suffer from hot flush it can be turned into more severe form than the menopausal women. Duration is also longer even after long time of regular menopause.

Hot flushes are an early and acute symptom of estrogen deficiency. The absence of estrogen can result in symptomatic as well as physiologic changes. Estrogen is important for blood flow, synaptic activity, neuronal growth, the survival of cholinergic neurons, and many other functions, including cognition. In general, estrogen has a positive effect on mood and contributes to a sense of well-being. In an estrogen-deficient state such as occurs after the menopause, a higher incidence of depression (clinical or sub clinical) is manifest. Some of this trend may be related to estrogen deficiency. Estrogen is also thought to have an overall positive effect on verbal memory. So main objective of treatment of hot flush is hormone replacement.

Hormone replacement has a tremendous affect on menopausal symptoms. Thus hot flush is cured with it. Just after two or three doses you will find a vigorous change in the physical environment of the patient. But no benefit is uneventful. If you take long time of hormone replacement therapy, you may develop some other problems, like atherosclerosis(deposition of atheromatous plaque inside the wall of blood vessel specially due to increase of cholesterol in blood.) which leads to Coronary(heart) Vessel disease, stroke, peripheral vascular diseases, loss of memory for short or long form, cancer in breast, cancer in the uterus etc. this long term effect may be due to increase amount of estrogen hormone level in blood due to direct uptake of hormone.

As direct raise of hormone level creates some long term complications, some drugs are now being used to raise the estrogen sensitivity. They are Selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). Beside this plant source of natural estrogen phytoestrogen can be taken.

Last of all lets know about some life style modifications. Avoid drinks containing caffeine. Change of spicy food intake habit into less spicy. Try to take soy rich diet. Smart exercise practice not to build up strong muscles but to burn fat smoothly.

So that’s all the basics from hot flush…

Results of a new study suggest that the women, who are planning for becoming pregnant, must drop the extra weight they are carrying, as they have higher odds to give birth to babies with some birth defects.

Judith Rankin, the lead author of the study, says: “Our study has found that obesity in pregnant women increases the risk of birth defects in babies they bear.”

The study has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Feb.11 issue.

There are many previous studies whose results show that obesity in pregnant women can become the cause of various problems including gestational diabetes, higher risk of blood clotting, hypertension, infections and Cesarean delivery. Similarly, babies born to these women may be too large and have a higher risk for perinatal death.

Obesity in pregnant women is also associated with different congenital anomalies like spina bifida, defects in neural tube, cleft lip, heart defects etc.

The background information in the study shows that various birth defects in the babies serve as the biggest factor behind infant mortality and still birth.

To know more about that link, Rankin and team looked for almost 2000 studies that had information on birth defects and early pregnancy weight. The researchers reviewed 39 studies to conduct the research. They found that obese mother had 87% higher risk of giving birth to babies with birth defects than the women with normal body weight.

In 1,409 middle age people, researchers analyzed the consumption of coffee for twenty one years. Meanwhile, forty eight of them developed dementia and sixty one Alzheimer’s diseases.

In the study, researchers found that participants who drink three to five cups of coffee each day have 65 percent less chances of developing dementia than the people take two cup or less. But the number of people who showed such benefits was too low to draw any conclusion.

Dr. Miia Kivipelto, the lead researcher is not certifying coffee as a preventive health measure and said, “This study is strictly base on observations, there is no evidence that the non-coffee drinkers will have some protective effect after the use of coffee.”

The findings were published after controlling most of the socioeconomic factors including hypercholesterolemia and hypertension.

There are some promising factors that enable coffee to minimize the risk of dementia later in life. Previous study has linked the consumption of coffee with reduced type 2 diabetes that is a key cause of dementia.

In animal studies, it has shown that, caffeine avoids the formation of amyloid plaque in the brain, a key factor for Alzheimer’s disease. Coffee also contains some antioxidants that can reduce the cardiovascular risks for dementia. Dr. Kivipelto also noticed that previous studies have linked the coffee consumption with reduced risk of Parkinson’s disease.

The water samples were taken from Patancheru treated water. This waste water is the drain of about 90 drug manufacturing companies.

These tests and researches have been lead by Joakim Larsson, an environmental scientist at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, and his team at Patancheru Enviro Tech Ltd. Plant. The shocking result showed that the water is abundant in Ciprofloxacin, a renowned antibiotic used for various disease treatments.

The so called treated water contained 21 antibiotics traces in it. These 21 medicines are used in general to treat ailments like ulcer, gonorrhea, chronic liver disease, hypertension, heart ailments, depression, and other such diseases. The water is undoubtedly harmful for health, which poor villagers are forced to drink; “We don’t have any other source, so we’re drinking it.” Klaus Kuemmerer, a chemist at the University of Freiburg Medical Center in Germany, an expert on drug resistance said, “If you take a bath there, then you have all the antibiotics you need for treatment,” “If you just swallow a few gasps of water, you’re treated for everything. The question is for how long?”

The problem is more serious because the medicines that are thrown as waste are not properly metabolized. The amount of dumping unused and expired medicines is very high, as they are annually flushed out by patients, medical stores, hospitals and manufacturers.

The problem of environmental pollution is very high in this regard also damaging human health at large.

It has been observed that obese people often have to become the victim of their fellows’ critical remarks and bullying and perhaps this is a bigger reason that most of people want to shed their extra pounds in the twinkling of an eye. They seem to look for best weight loss pills, diet programs and various exercises. They often experience that most of these weight loss pills and other programs prove good for nothing and sometimes even put them in new troubles.

Before choosing any weight loss pill or other product, people need to be a lot more attentive, as it’s a real serious issue and you shouldn’t allow others to play with your health only for minting some money.

When it’s about losing weight loss naturally and without any side-effect, many may find natural weight loss pill a better option than prescription weight loss pills. It’s true that many prescription weight loss pills have proven quite effective in losing weight quickly, but most of these pills have some side-effects like dizziness, blurred vision, poor digestive system, diarrhea etc. People know well that many of these prescription weight loss pills can become the cause of various side-effects and that’s why the want to lose their extra lard in a natural way. However, before choosing some natural weight loss pill you must consider its ingredients and try to find out whether it would serve your purpose or not.

In their study that included 8,801 older adults (65 and over), the researchers, from the Institut National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medicale, Paris, found that seasonal changes caused increase and drop in the systolic and diastolic blood pressures. The researchers noticed that in cold weather systolic blood pressure was 5 points higher than in summer season. The systolic blood pressure of the 33.4% older adults in winter was higher than 159 and diastolic blood pressure was higher than 94mm.

The study has been published in the Archives of Internal Medicine 12 Jan issue.

It has not been found what the basic reason behind this correlation. According to the study authors it might be linked with the baroreflex that is a blood pressure related mechanism and in elderly this mechanism is modified that proves helpful to control stress response and other such involuntary actions.

In some previous studies it has been found that seasonal change cause variation in blood pressure, but it was not specific to the older adults.

“The study shows that there is not a casual, but serious link between outer temperature and blood pressure, and it may help to find some effective treatment for higher blood pressure in older adults,” the lead author of the study says.

When it’s about cocaine abuse, the basic difference between cocaine and crack cocaine is that cocaine is quite well-known as an expensive drug that is widely used by rich and glamorous people. On the other hand, Crack cocaine is cheap and it is mostly used by poor men to get rid of worries and tensions of life. The sad fact is that it makes them feel free of worries and tensions for the time being, but takes them as well as their loved ones in a perpetual agony.

Cocaine is available in powder as well as soluble forms and used by inhaling or through injection. Many addicts mix cocaine with heroine and use it for well-known snowballing. It has been observed that this practice become the cause of more deaths than just of heroine abuse only. Crack cocaine is cheap and that’s why highly addictive and can become an epidemic if not checked in a proper way.

Cocaine is well-known for its high addictiveness, as it gives the feeling of extreme energy, astuteness and confidence to the abusers and because of these traits it becomes quite difficult for the abusers to kick that drug. The user becomes quite habitual to this boost in energy and confidence, and feels somewhat depressed and low when its effects begin to disappear. The user wants to be at the same heights as soon as possible and craves for the drug.

The worst effects of cocaine on the user body are that it takes body to extra hard levels of activity that becomes the cause of damaging heart rates, hypertension, nausea, cramps and increased body temperature. These are only a few well-known symptoms and there are many others that prove catastrophic for overall health. Its long term use can also cause heart attacks, stroke, paranoia and schizophrenia.

In this six-year study, the researchers also found that women with some college education were 19 percent more likely to have preeclampsia and pregnancy-induced hypertension than women with a high school education. Women who gave birth in Colorado during six-year were included in the study.

The study has been presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Nephrology in Philadelphia.

There are some known risk factors for preeclampsia and PIH and that include older age, excessive weight and giving birth to multiple babies. The researchers validated these factors in this new study. One researcher suggests that the link between rural living and preeclampsia, PIH risk may be due to maternal poverty and social deprivation.

Dr. Rebecca Moore, who led the study, says in a news release: “We know about the traditional risk factors for preeclampsia and PIH, but these diseases are still enigmatic and no effective way has been developed to reduce their incidence.”

A rapid increase in blood pressure along with kidney damage can occur due to Preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a very common condition and it is known as the third most common cause of maternal death in the US, but the real cause of the disease is still unknown. There is no fixed cure for it, but is often resolved after delivery.

This latest research is also indicating that, the amount of caffeine a person consumes through any source such as tea, coffee, beverages, chocolates or prescribed drugs, may directly effects one’s health, especially when pregnant.

Researchers found that, pregnant women who take more than two cups of coffee a day have a risk of miscarriage twofold than those women who avoid caffeine. Underweight infants are more likely to develop multiple health issues when they grow older, including hypertension, diabetes and heart diseases.

Women who use caffeine between 100-200 milligrams, had a 20 percent amplified risk of having a baby of low birth weight, the study found. Comparison was made with the women who consumed less than 100 milligrams daily.

“Caffeine consumption during pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of fetal growth restriction and this association continued throughout pregnancy,” Justin Konje at the University of Leicester in Britain and colleagues wrote.

“Sensible advice would be to reduce caffeine intake before conception and throughout pregnancy.”

Researches analyzed 2,645 women at an average age of 30 in their first trimester of pregnancy. The women reported average caffeine consumption during pregnancy of 159 milligrams per day, lower than new recommended limits of 200 milligrams in Britain.

The probability of having an underweight baby rose to 50 percent for women who consumed between 200 milligrams and 299 milligrams each day, about two to three cups of coffee.

”Even small amounts may prove harmful but the best advice was to limit caffeine consumption to below 100 milligrams a day.” Konje said
