Asthma

Asthma is a dreadful chronic lung disease that results in inflammation of narrowing of airways. The airways are nothing but the tubes that carry air into and also out of your lungs.

Asthma makes the airways to narrow thereby decreasing the flow of air to the lungs. The airways become swollen and sensitive and begin to react to all substances that are breathed in.

Swelling of airways make them more narrow. Asthma also causes difficulty in breathing. Asthma has become a common disease among children and teens.

Sometimes the symptoms of asthma are mild and can be cured after treatment. In other cases where the symptoms get even more intense and worse an asthma attack may occur.

The attack can be mild, moderate, severe and very severe. Therefore it is necessary that the symptoms are taken into consideration at the beginning stage itself.

Though the exact causes of asthma are not known it has been told that a combination of factors actually result in Asthma. These may include the following:

Chronic Cough

Unlike common cough, chronic cough is a cough which tends to be long standing and does not easily vanish or go away soon. But it itself is not a disease as it is one of the symptoms of underlying disease and it will disappear when the related disease is well treated.

Most common cause of chronic cough is cigarette smoking. Asthma is the cause which is placed second. The asthmatic patient will have their disease of airways and they will have their breathing difficulties as well and it is aggravated by cold air, exposure to pollen, perfumes or smoke and dust. Backward flow of stomach content with its acid and enzyme in to esophagus is called the esophageal reflux and it results in the spasm or tightness of the air way and ends in persistent cough.

Structural changes in the sinus and their infection cause a long standing cough or at least a throat clearing habit continuously. Lung infection such as bronchitis, pneumonia and tuberculosis are the most common causes of chronic cough. Lungs are infected by viruses and bacteria and even after curing these diseases cough is taking its protracted course.

In some individuals, the anti hypertensive drugs such as ACE inhibitor causes the chronic cough and it can be stopped only by discontinuing the medicine. Tumors and cancer in the lungs are the main reasons for certain persistent and chronic cough.

Tentative Drug May Moisten Severe Asthma

A new experimental drug is found helpful to ease the severe asthma attacks which are often controlled by oral steroids. Two studies have observed that the regular use of mepolizumab not only reduces asthma aggravations but also the people under experimental use had been noticed with the decreased levels of eosinophils-the white blood cells considered as a probable reason of asthma.

The phenomenon involves the blockage of a protein interleukin-5, the vital part for the growth of eosinophils. Though the exact functioning of eosinophils is not known exactly, it has long been found that its levels rise during asthma exacerbations.

Both the studies observed that mepolizumb reduced aggravations in severe prednisone-dependent asthma and along with the improvement in the quality of life. Moreover the people on mepolizumb were capable to cut the dosage of prednisone to cure the severe asthma attacks.

Housecleaning products may prove harmful for women asthma patients

According to the US researchers chemicals found in different housecleaning products may prove quite risky for women suffering from asthma.

In their three month study period, the researchers noticed the health effects of cleaning products in women who were suffering from asthma or didn’t have asthma. The researchers found that women with asthma had a considerable higher number of lower respiratory tract symptoms.

Dr. Jonathon A. Bernstein, the lead author of the study, says about the study “we have found that both groups of women had higher upper and lower tract respiratory tract symptoms because of exposure to these mild toxic (as they were rated) cleaning agents.

The researchers suggest “Women with asthma must be interviewed routinely and they should be asked what kind of cleaning agents they use to clean their houses, as they have a dire need to know about the potent risks of these cleaning agents.”

Antifungal drug can prove helpful for asthma patients, study finds

According to a British study, itraconazole (an antifungal medicine) may prove helpful for those patients with sever asthma who are also sensitive to some fungi.

In this double blind study, the researchers from Manchester University found that in patients with asthma and sensitivity, itraconazole daily dose proved quite helpful to improve lung function, runny nose and life quality in 62% such patients.

But, the other patients who got that medicine left this 32-week trial before completion and some of them reported side effects like weakness of muscles, breathlessness and nausea.

These findings are expected to appear in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, January issue.

A new study suggests that baby’s birth season may be helpful to predict the child’s risk for asthma.

The study is expected to be issued in the first December issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and it shows that babies born in autumn have almost a 30% higher risk for developing asthma than the babies born at other times of the year.

Dr. Tina Hartert, senior author of the study, says: “our study finds that children born in the Northern hemisphere in the fall months have the highest rates of asthma and it indicates that winter viruses such as RSV cause asthma.”

“Now we need to prove that preventing these viruses can prevent asthma,” she added.
