Diagnosis for Alcoholism

The remainders of people with significant alcohol problems continue to have these problems throughout their lives. Some of these people become physically ill or completely unable to hold jobs or maintain their relationships. Others are able to hide or control their alcohol abuse enough to keep their jobs and may be in relationships with people who facilitate their alcohol dependency.

Here are various approaches for the treatment of alcoholisms.

Detoxification:

Basically individuals are assisted in stopping their use of alcohol then the substance is allowed to eliminate from the body. Many detoxification programs are in hospitals and clinics so that physicians can monitor individuals through withdrawal from the alcohol, making them more comfortable and intervening.

Detoxification is especially important when the substance being used can cause permanent organ or brain damage or is frequently lethal. Detoxification usually takes 4 to 7 days.

Women drink less alcohol than do men in most cultures and are less likely to have alcohol-related disorders than are men. Symptoms of alcoholisms can be mild or so severe as to be life threatening.

People who are suffering from alcoholism slur their words, walk with unsteady gates, have trouble paying attention or remembering things and are slow and awkward in their physical reactions. They may act inappropriately, becoming aggressive, saying rude things or taking off their clothes in public. Their moods may swings from exuberance to despair. With extreme intoxication they may fall into stupors or comas. Often, they do not recognize they are intoxicated or may flatly deny it, even though it is obvious.

Other behavioral effects of alcoholisms are impaired judgment and reaction time, feelings of relaxation, release of inhibitions, impaired motor functions, sensory and motor impairment, staggering and inappropriate sexual and aggressive behavior.

Alcoholism

The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and The American Society of Addiction Medicine define alcoholism:

“A primary, chronic disease characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking.”

The DSM-IV (the diagnostic statistical manual in psychiatry and psychology) defines alcohol abuse as repeated use despite recurrent adverse consequences.  It further defines alcohol dependence as alcohol abuse combined with tolerance, withdrawal, and an uncontrollable drive to drink. Within psychology and psychiatry, alcoholism is the popular term for alcohol dependence.

The legal definition of alcoholism is much narrower than the criteria for a diagnosis of alcoholism. Most states in the United States considered a person to be under the influence of alcohol if his or her blood-alcohol level is above 0.05 or 0.10. Deficits in attentions, reaction time and coordination arise even with the first deink and can interfere with the ability to operate a car or machinery safely and to perform other tasks requiring a steady hand, coordination, clear thinking and clear vision. These deficits are not always readily observable even to trained observers. People often leave parties or bars with blood-alcohol levels well above the legal limit and dangerous deficits in their ability to drive without appearing drunk.
