Risk for developing alcohol-use disorders (AUDs) is higher in causal smokers
A U.S. study finds that casual smokers have 16% higher risk than nonsmokers to become hazardous drinker and similarly, they are at 5% higher risk to develop alcohol-use disorders (AUDs).
The researchers from Yale University School of Medicine analyzed data on more than 5,000 adults( aged 18to 25) who were asked about their current smoking behavior, frequency of alcohol use, weekly alcohol intake, rates of hazardous drinking and AUD diagnoses.
The study has been published online in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research and it is expected to be published in print issue of the journal in December.
Sherry A. McKee, who led the study, told about the study in journal news release: “ Though casual smoking is quite common in college students, the relation between drinking behavior and smoking is the same for young adults no matter whether they are students or not.”
He added, “this study is important as it focuses on particular groups that have been defined by age and behaviors related to smoking and drinking. It can help us to better understand the range of drinking patterns and the developmental course of problematic drinking.”
Drinking and smoking seem to promote each other and lead to bouts of heavy drinking and smoking.
McKee explained that many states have banned smoking including businesses where alcohol is served.
