Firstly, nail fungus can be recognized early on if you see discoloration of the tip of your nail – if the tip turns yellow or even black. Then the infection, if left untreated, spreads to the rest of the nail. Usually, nail fungus occurs in the toenails as they are constantly exposed, but fingernails are affected as well. You can get nail fungus from being in or working around wet conditions like swimming pools, shower rooms, etc. Dermatophytes, the tiny organisms that cause the nail fungus get embedded between your nail base and your nail – they destroy the keratin, thus there is no nail protection. Then the fungus spreads.

The first thing you should know is that nails are just dead cuticles of the skin, and more often than not, the ointments that are generally used cannot penetrate into the thickened nails or toenails – therefore they are ineffective in curing the fungus. There are many ointments available in the market like$ Fluconazole, Itraconazole, ZetaClear.

So now let’s get to nail fungus treatment. Firstly, you should always keep your nails clean and dry. Since nail fungus generally occurs on the toenails, avoid wearing your shows too tight, or for prolonged durations of time – as this can cause perspiration and the gradual build-up of fungus. Don’t borrow a nail cutter off people, as this transfers fungus.

When it comes to medication for nail fungus, it’s a long process – the idea is to be aware and try to prevent it. But nail fungus treatment takes about 2-3 months, during which time your nails grow, and the medicine that you are applying prevents further growth of the fungus – thus your nail becomes healthy again. You should be aware that sometimes, nail fungus cannot be cured completely, which is why your doctor might recommend continued use of your anti-fungal cream.

Maintenance of proper hygiene is a must. wear open shows as much as possible, and if your socks become damp for any reason, change them immediately – wearing absorbent socks is always a good idea. There are many ways to treat nail fungus. For instance, you can rub the affected nails with cotton balls dipped in tea tree oil (which is a very powerful fungicide) – do it twice every day, once in the morning, and once at night.

You can also soak your nails in a basin filled with warm water and vinegar (apple cider vinegar is recommended) for about 20 minutes, and then wipe them dry with super absorbent paper. This is a home remedy that is known to be quite effective if you do it twice daily. You can also try swabbing your nails with a solution of tea tree oil and lavender oil. There are also AHA creams available in the market that you can use – apply before going to bed at night.

Consulting a proper doctor for treating your nail fungus problem is a must – he will be able to point you in the right direction and prescribe ointments if required. But there are things that you can do at home, which we have discussed above, and there are certain precautionary measures you can take. Avoid public bathrooms and public shower stalls, as they are breeding places for fungus and you could pick it up quite easily. If you are getting your nails clipped at a salon, make sure the clipper has been properly disinfected.
