According to Canadian researchers, childhood abuse can become the cause of lifelong damage by altering the genes, as they have found by examining the brains of suicide victims.

The researchers said that there were clear changes in brains of those children who became the victim of abuse in their childhood and committed suicide later on.

This can be very helpful to find out why childhood abuse becomes the cause of depression and other mental diseases.

The study may also prove helpful to find new treatments for people who have abusive childhood and its related issues.

In their study, researchers from McGill University, Canada examined the brains of those 36 people who died suddenly, 12 out of them were suicide cases that were become the victim of abuse, 12 suicide victims didn’t have apparent abuse history and 12 died suddenly in accidents.

A child always needs a diet that is balanced and has all the necessary nutrients that are needed for healthy growth. Their daily energy needs are constant so diet should also be framed in that way.

Calories

The calories needed by a child will be far higher than the adults due to the following factors. Their basal metabolism activities are high than any stage in their life. The children’s physical activity will be more when compared to the adults. The third factor is they need extra energy for their physical and mental growth.

Proteins

The requirement of proteins will be greater in childhood than in adult stage. The proteins are necessary for tissue repairs and also for tissue growth. It is recommended to supply about 14% of the energy as proteins. Food substances like milk, milk products, meats, fowl, fish, eggs, nut and cereals are very rich in proteins and these food substances should be added in diet liberally.

The results of a new study reveal that a large number of kids and teens in the US are taking vitamins and other supplements that they don’t require, contrarily, many poor kids who need such supplements are not getting them.

According to some experts when someone takes different kinds of diets, one doesn’t need these vitamin or mineral supplements.

The study, which has been published in the Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine, also says that many poor children who need such supplements are not getting them. Most of such kids belong to low-income families, have poor nutrition and are not physically active.

These vitamin supplements are not recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics to the most of kids over one year of age. However, kids, those suffer from some chronic disease and have other eating disorders or problems, are given such supplements.

More outdoor activities mean better vision for kids

The results of a new study show that kids, who spend more time indoor, have higher risk of developing myopia, while those kids who spend less time in front of TV and more time in outdoor activities have a better vision and clearly see the things from a distance.

However, the new study doesn’t actually find out how much indoor activities can become the cause of poor eyesight and what’s the actual mechanism behind it.

But researchers say that it seems quite prudent to support kids’ outdoor activities, as it can be quite helpful to decrease the risk of myopia development that is on increase in a considerable number of kids and lack of outdoor activities is the biggest factor behind that increasing risk.

Jane Gwizada, the lead author of the study, says: “In the US, nearly one third of Americans are suffering from myopia, and these rates are much higher in many some other parts of Asia.”

Even third-hand smoke is risky for babies and pregnant women, survey results show

Posted: January 9th 2009 By editor1         under: Children Health, Health News, Pregnancy, Smoking     Tags: , , ,

Most of smokers don’t know that even third-hand smoke can be dangerous for babies and pregnant women, a US study finds.

Different contaminations in cigarette smoke can stick to hair or fabrics, but in this survey of 1,500 people, it was noticed that even less than half of smokers were aware of that fact.

Only one third had a strict rule regarding not to smoke in their house, the journal Pediatrics report suggests.

Tommy’s, the UK baby charity, says that it is quite important for pregnant women to be alerted.

There is a lot of evidence, which shows that second-hand can be risky for health and especially for kids and most of parents seem to adopt a policy of not smoking in the presence of their kids.

But Jonathan Winickoff, a Professor at Massachusetts Hospital, says that it doesn’t provide complete protection.

Tropical climes trips may double your joys in holidays, but before jetting off to these sun-drenched climes you must consider how you can guard your kids’ health.

“In many developing tropical countries, tainted water and food often serve as a serious threat to the visitors particularly kids. Similarly, insects which carried diseases are also common at these places.  Many region-specific vaccines for yellow fever, typhoid fever and hepatitis A are available these days and if you want your trips comfortable, you should vaccinate your kids as well as yourself against these diseases,” says Dr. Andrea Summer, a pediatrics professor at South Carolina University.

Aside from this, children must be updated for all regular vaccinations like yearly flu shot.
