Firstly, there is osteoarthritis – which is the most common. This is a degenerative condition which involves damage to the cartilage – this makes the bones rub against each other. This causes friction, giving you pain and limiting your movement. Osteoarthritis is mainly age-related, it can be treated with natural therapy and some modification in lifestyle.

The second most common type is rheumatoid arthritis – which is the most debilitating form. It starts off as an ache in the joints – then builds its way to joint deformation. Therefore, your quality of life and routine tasks are severely compromise. It occurs more in women than in men, and the symptoms generally occur over a long period.

Then there is gout – another type, which causes severe pain and inflammation,it usually starts with the big toe. More men than women are affected by gout, but there is good news – gout can be controlled with natural remedies and modifications to the diet.

Fractures boost death risk in elderly

The results of a new study suggest that any kind of bone fracture in elderly (over 60) must be considered serious.

In their study, the Australian researchers noted that following some low trauma fracture, death risk goes up for almost five years and in case of some fracture it goes up for nearly ten years.

Dr. Jacqueline Center, who led the study, says: “Any low trauma fracture is associated with early death, and it’s not only about hip fracture.”

“That’s why it is quite important to consider these low trauma fractures a serious issue in older adults,” she added.

The study has been published in the American Medical Association Journal February 4 issue.

Every year, nearly 35 percent older adults (65 and over) in the US have to suffer from fall, and almost 16,000 out of them die because of these falls. Statistics from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveal.

Statistics for this new study were taken from a large scale research in which nearly 32,000 people were included and almost 4,000 out of them were 60 or over years of age at the beginning of the study.

Arthroscopic surgery is useless for knee Osteoarthritis

WEDNESDAY, (HealthDay News) – Wildly practiced arthroscopic surgery, to treat osteoarthritis of the knee, proves ineffective without medical and physical therapy, new research shows.

This is the second major study that has challenged the benefits of the surgery, and it may well influence how patients are treated.

“There’s going to be a swing in practice,” said Dr. Brian Feagan, co-author of a study in the Sept. 11 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).

Providentially, there are still plenty of options available for the 27 million people in the U.S who suffer from osteoarthritis.
