Our eyes play an important role in our lives as eyes are the most important, yet the most delicate part of our body. Eyes are very commonly infected. Eye infections can be of serious nature and they can be of minor status. Eye infections are basically caused due to bacterial, microscopic or other microbiological agents present in the eyes, resulting in eye ailments. Eye ailments are diseases which one has to experience at least once in their life. Eye infections can occur due to improper methods of cleansing and long hours of lens wearing without proper disinfection. They if become serious, require proper medical attention. Some symptoms of eye infection include eye-itching, blurring vision, watery eyes, eye redness, eye pain, eye swelling, excessive loss of eye lashes, and many others.

Proper timing is a very important factor in treatment and cure, as they say, ”a stitch in time, saves nine”. If a person ignores these symptoms, in serious conditions, he may become blind. Some common eye diseases are: Amblyopia (lazy eyes), Astigmatism, Cataracts, Colour Blindness, Diabetic Retinopathy, Double Vision (Diplopia), Dry Eye Syndrome, Eye Twitching, Glaucoma, and Hyperopia (Farsightedness).

Amblyopia is commonly known as lazy eyes, and is generally developed in children under age 6. If it is not treated properly at the right time, it can become serious, blurring the image in one eye, in some cases, complete failure in vision development in one eye. It is mostly detected by parents. Its treatment is visual therapy or the usage of related eye drops.
Astigmatism is a disease caused by an irregularly shaped lens, which is placed behind cornea. This disease may be accompanied by near sightedness or farsightedness. Its prior symptoms include blur vision. Its initial-stage treatments include usage of eye drops, and wearing eye glasses. But in extreme cases, the patient may need refractive surgery.

Cataract is generally caused in advancing years. Old age is one of its basic causes. Like other eye disease symptoms, blur image is its symptom too. Vision becomes cloudy and the patient in some cases fails to see things clearly. Routine procedure of cataract removal is surgery. The methods of surgery vary from surgeon to surgeon, but the result is same, that is cure. Cataract surgery hardly fails from achieving its goals.

Colour Blindness is a disease in which the patient doesn’t become blind at all, rather, he fails to differentiate between colours like red and green or blue and yellow.

Vitamins are organic compounds needed in small amounts for proper nutrition. A daily intake of milk and milk products, bread and cereal, egg yolk, fish liver oils, green vegetables, nuts, fruits and meats, fish or poultry sufficiently provide you with all the vitamins you need. These foods should be prepared in a manner that preserves and retains their vitamin content. For instance, overcooking of vegetables or exposure to air diminishes the vitamin content in foods. If you take a balanced diet, you will never need vitamin supplements.

Deficiency of vitamins can be stimulated by diseases and drugs, and are common in affluent countries. There is no doubt that lack of vitamins will result in illness, but over-dosage of vitamins can cause major medical problems, excessive vitamin A (retinol) can cause enlargement of liver and spleen, hair and weight loss and severe headaches; in children excess vitamin A can retard growth while, chronic vitamin D (calciferol) can cause nausea, constipation or diarrhea, high blood pressure; and in children vitamin D overdoses can impair physical and mental development. Hence, it is always advised to overzealous parents not to buy vitamin fortified candies for their children advertised on television.

Excess of vitamin K can be very harmful for new born babies, especially premature ones. Large excess of vitamin E can cause disturbances in the reproductive functions of the body. Excess and accumulation of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) can prove to be toxic and excess of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) can cause severe diarrhea and cases of development of gout has also been reported.

People take extra supplements of vitamins as they believe that vitamins pills will grow hair, curb appetite, or make one look youthful, this is all false publicity to sell vitamin supplements. It should be made clear that vitamins are needed in only small amounts but those small amounts are vital for good health, we must stick to a balanced diet comprising appropriate amounts of all vitamins!
