SAN DIEGO-Alcohol consumption has been linked to a higher risk of the most common kind of breast cancer among older women, a large U.S study suggests.

The National Cancer Institute

Data from more than 184,000 women is the largest of three big studies to discover that drinking increases the risk of breast cancer among older women; this was stated by Jasmine Lew on Sunday, a researcher at the National Cancer Institute and the study’s lead investigator.

Hormone-sensitive disease

The research shows that women who have three or more drinks a day, the risk of breast cancer is 51% higher in them and the women with one or two small drinks a day have 32% chances to grow a hormone-sensitive disease.

While presenting the findings at the convention of the American Association for Cancer Research Lew explained that the risk was apparent apart from the kind of alcohol.
Estrogen and progesterone receptors.

Tumors, those are positive for both the estrogen and progesterone receptors, have been found in almost 70 % women who have been identified with breast cancer.According to Lew the findings from the NCI study give weight to the assumption that alcohol’s intrusion with the metabolism of estrogen increases the threat of cancer.

The second biggest cancer

Lew stated that women must consult with their doctors to review the risk issues and mull over changes in lifestyle. After lung cancer breast cancer is the second biggest cancer of women.1.2 million people all around the world will suffer from that disease this year and almost 500,000 will have to lose the battle for life.

However, some studies associate the light use of alcoholic drinks particularly red wine to heart protection.
